History:
French Clemenceau (R98) was a French aircraft carrier and the lead ship of her class, named after the French statesman Georges Clemenceau. She was laid down in 1955, launched in 1957, and commissioned into the French Navy in 1961. As a key part of French’s post–World War II naval modernization, French Clemenceau (R98) served as the backbone of French naval aviation for nearly four decades.
The carrier operated a variety of fixed-wing aircraft, including Super Étendard strike fighters and Étendard IVs, and supported missions involving fleet defense, nuclear strike capability, and overseas deployments. French Clemenceau (R98) participated in numerous operations, including missions in Lebanon and the Gulf War, and symbolized French’s independent defense posture.
After 36 years of service, French Clemenceau (R98) was decommissioned in 1997. Her retirement marked the end of an important era in French naval history. She was eventually dismantled in 2009 after a long and controversial scrapping process due to environmental concerns.
